TV: Emmys 2012 Winners

Now a few weeks ago I posted my predictions for the comedy side of this year's Emmys and it became my most viewed post, so now the winners have been revealed, let's see how it matches up.

Best Comedy Series went to Modern Family, this is a great show and I love watching it, but their last season wasn't their best, I actually found The Big Bang Theory much funnier, but still it's a deserved win.

Best Lead Actor went to Jon Cryer in Two & A Half Men, now I was surprised by this as TAAHM usually gets ignored in the Emmys, despite Cryer being nominated for Supporting Actor year after year, but now he's playing with the big boys, he wins.  I'm happy for Cryer, because he really shone in this season despite all the nonsense with Charlie Sheen and working alongside Ashton Kutcher, who I'm still on the fence with despite the one whole season he was in.  Personally, I believe Jim Parsons should've won this award once again, but Jon Cryer is a close second.

Best Lead Actress went to Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Veep, I can't really comment too much about this as I don't watch the show, but I do have to commend Zooey Deschanel (New Girl) for getting a nomination as her character (Jess Day) is one of my favourite characters at the moment.

Best Supporting Actor went to Eric Stonestreet in Modern Family, seeing as Modern Family dominate this category it's no shock that one of them has won, but I'm surprised Stonestreet was the one winning it.  My money was on either Ty Burrell or Ed O'Neill or even Max Greenfield in New Girl.  But a win is a win and any Modern Family actor winning an award is good news, but I would love to see either Jesse Tyler Ferguson or Ed O'Neill win one.

Best Supporting Actress went to Julie Bowen in Modern Family, this is the first one I truly agree with as in one of my previous blogs, I reviewed the episode "Go Bullfrogs!" and I said this should the episode than Bowen gets her Emmy nomination with and it did and she won, her performance as the mother gone wild in this episode was brilliant and deserved the support.  Next year, I want the kids to get a look in, either Sarah Hyland or Ariel Winter should get a nomination for Supporting Actress and Nolan Gould should definitely get one for Supporting Actor.

Best Guest Actor went to Jimmy Fallon in Saturday Night Live, once again a short comment about it.  I only said Greg Kinnear should win because his performance was the only one I saw in the line up, but I imagine Fallon deserved his Emmy.

Finally Best Guest Actress went to Kathy Bates in Two & A Half Men, another definite winner in my book.  I watched that performance and thought it couldn't get any more awesome, Kathy Bates as Charlie Harper, but it was a treat for the fans to see both Jon Cryer and Kathy Bates take on the iconic role, personally Cryer should've got the Emmy for his Charlie Harper impersonation, but it's good to know Charlie Sheen's meltdown managed to get TAAHM some Emmy respect.

So a few shock choices, a couple to be expected and rest were the right choices, so what will next year hold?  Sit back and find out as the 2012-13 US TV season begins now!

TV: Community

Time to talk about yet another one of my favourite US sitcoms, this time one of the lesser known ones, it's the Community College set, Community!!

Simply, seven loveable misfits form a study group in a Community College (It's a bit like the Open University) and get into crazy adventures both in and out of College and sometimes reality.  What I love about this show is the sheer uniqueness of the format, writing and style of it and of course the cultural references!

The characters are brilliantly created, written and acted, especially Abed Nadir (Danny Pudi) who is a Film and TV nerd (like me!), Jeff Winger (Joel McHale) the unofficial leader of the group and Ben Chang (Ken Jeong) the college's former Spanish teacher now student.  Abed basically lives his life as a TV show and doesn't understand real life, admit it, you'd want to live in a TV show (The Big Bang Theory would be mine!)  Jeff is a character who has grown the most, he started the study group mainly to get with Britta Perry (Gillian Jacobs) and now after the third season is searching for his long-lost father, emotional stuff.  Senor Chang is very weird, but you can't help but love him and hate him in separate measures, it does make me very Chang-ry though!  Other characters are Troy Barnes (Donald Glover) a former high school Quarterback, Annie Edison (Alison Brie) the well-organised one, Shirley Bennett (Yvette Nicole Brown) a religious housewife, Pierce Hawthorne (Chevy Chase) a businessman with old-world views and Craig Pelton (Jim Rash) the college's flamboyant Dean.

The show's format is very odd, some episodes are very normal, but at least a third of them are completely different styles, they have had war-style episodes with paintball, an episode entirely in clay-mation, a episode where they play Dungeons & Dragons and a few set as a documentary.  Most of these are the best episodes, the paintball episode is one of my favourites.  It's a very unusual way of telling stories, but at least they know that, Jeff usually points out the silliness of these stories and that makes them okay.

The first season is on DVD and the second season will be out soon in the UK, anyone reading this is the US will know season 4 is on TV soon, so watch out for this quirky, yet enjoyable show!

TV: Total Wipeout

Now for a spot of game shows, namely Total Wipeout, the show which sees grown men and women act like idiots and fall off stuff.

It's amazing now I can describe an entire show in one sentence and it's simply that and that's why I love this show, actually I love the US version more, but this is still good.  It's just simple TV, nothing too complicated, too clever or too serious and sometimes it's what we need, especially on a Saturday night, we want fun and this is good clean fun!

My main concern is the BBC's treatment of this show, stick it on any other channel and get the same ratings as they get on BBC One and they'd move heaven and earth to add more to the budget, but the BBC give it very little budget and advertising and it looks very cheap and tacky, they won't even let be in HD!  Plus, I don't think the presenters are right for the show either, Richard Hammond does a good job, but seeing him on Top Gear as well just doesn't match and I just think he does this for the money, though I don't think he gets much!  I personally think Blue Peter presenter Barney Harwood would be brilliant on the show.  I'm a bit on the fence with Amanda Byram, the way she acts silly on the show is a bit cringy, you need someone whose known for being a bit on the crazy side, maybe The One Show's Alex Jones?

But enough tweaking, I love this show and I would love to see the BBC give this show a bit more effort or put it on another channel, maybe Channel 4 or Sky 1.

TV: The X Factor UK

From sitcoms to talent shows in this month of TV.  And we start the talent show portion with the king of talent shows, The X Factor!

Now I may be the only straight male watching this for the singing, but I can say I love watching this show every Saturday night for three reasons.

One: The show is entertaining.  Now there maybe a few actual talents each year but what a lot of people love to see is the nutters or people who can't sing and they make the auditions much more fun than just seeing people who can actually sing as sometimes that can get boring.  Every now and again you'll find someone who'll make you go "wow" and those moments I love and hence why I think this show has it probably once every episode.

Two: The judges.  I don't think there's ever been a bad X Factor judge, usually each one gets the hang of it around their second series, but each one has their own style.  Whether you love or hate Simon Cowell, he knows what he's talking about and not only does he commend those who can sing, he also looks as their branding, image and potential, because it's all well and good having the chops, but you won't last in the music biz if you don't make music that's good or act too cocky or boring and that's why no one from The Voice has made it big yet, most of them are very good singers, but are quite dull!

Three: The success stories.  The first four series of the show had no one who could make it big (apart from Leona Lewis) but once Cheryl Cole was brought in, the show not only changed in style, but it changed in the way they brand and promote the acts, the fifth series has seen Alexandra Burke do well and JLS go on to be the biggest boy band in the country right now, but also Olly Murs, Cher Lloyd, Rebecca Ferguson, One Direction, Little Mix and Amelia Lily have been doing well too, expecially Cher Lloyd and One Direction, who are big stuff in America!

So like it or lump it, X Factor has made stars and judging by this year's bunch, a few more have got potential to join the big leagues, so it's four yeses and we'll see you at bootcamp!!

TV: The Big Bang Theory

Now I did say September would be the month of television, mainly because a lot of my favourite shows begin around this time and I will begin with my favourite comedy, The Big Bang Theory!  For those out of this nerdy loop I will briefly explain.

Basically, the show follows 4 very nerdy guys when 2 of them get a attractive new neighbour called Penny and things go on from there, such as Physics Bowls, Arctic expeditions, Bowling, 21 seconds of Indiana Jones and Fruit Loops.  I have loved this show since episode one, why I love it is because I myself am a bit of a geek, even more so after 5 years of this show, and it speaks to me more than other sitcoms, there are many great sitcoms, which I will talk about over this month, but this is my sitcom.

The show has changed a lot since take-out on the couch, there have been new characters, Amy Ferrah Fowler comes to mind as she's probably the new one most people like, she's been nominated for an Emmy and only Jim Parsons gets nominated for Emmys.  The Penny-Leonard Relationship has also evolved too, they are now in a Beta-test stage, which I think all relationships should have by the way!  When the show started I thought it'd be great if Leonard and Penny got together, but now I'm not sure.  Being a sitcom nerd, I know it'll happen, but if it were me, I'd bring another female into the mix and let Leonard really decide between her and Penny and maybe Penny would try harder to be with Leonard, not that I've given it much thought!  One character whose changed the most is Howard Wolowitz, the sex-crazed bright shirt wearing Jewish guy who lives with his mother is, at times, my second favourite character.  He has now changed into Mr. Committed now he's married to Bernadette, one of my favourite episodes is where she learns about his seedy past and the speech he gives to Penny is one of the sweetest things ever heard on television.

Finally I must dedicate this part of the post to Dr. Sheldon Lee Cooper.  Possibly the best comedy character ever created.  What I think people love about him is his uniqueness, there is no one like him on a sitcom today, you have your Charlie Harpers and your Barney Stinsons, but Sheldon is a very rare thing and he intrigues people in a way you want to see how he sees the world.  Jim Parsons has played Sheldon for 5 years and has gained a loyal fanbase, critical acclaim and a number of awards and may it forever continue!

Thus begin-eth the month of TV!!

Opinion: Gangnam Style

I know what you're all thinking, what the hell is "Gangnam Style"?  Well folks, I'll tell you.  It's a music video for a song by Korean mega star PSY and I'll say to you right now, it's very weird, very random and very funny!

The song itself is about the Gangnam lifestyle which people live in Seoul, South Korea.  The majority of the song is in Korean, apart from a few English words thrown in for the hell of it!  Looking at the video, you wouldn't think it had anything to do with lifestyle, if so a very unique lifestyle, as it's a very odd video but that's it's appeal, the sheer randomness of it all, the song itself is a catchy tune.

The video has had a massive reaction in Korea and it's starting to make waves is the US, as PSY is currently in the US and the video is #2 in the Youtube 100, so he's becoming a worldwide star.  It's yet to have an impact in the UK yet, but as one domino falls, another's bound to follow!

If you want to watch the video, click the link below and see what the world has seen over 40 million times!

Film: Batman Vs. Spiderman

Been holding this one off for a while now, but here it is.  The mighty battle between The Amazing Spiderman and The Dark Knight Rises.  We'll start with Spiderman.

Of course this film got a mixed reception since it's announcement, whether it was too early for a reboot or whether Andrew Garfield was the right choice or the replacement of Mary Jane to Gwen Stacy as the main love interest would be given public approval.  I can say that all these changes were acceptable after seeing the film.  I still think 5 years since the last film to reboot was a shock decision, but if you take the previous films out of the equation, this film was very enjoyable, very clever and well produced.  Now the big question that plagued me was the replacement of Tobey Maguire, he was the quintessential Peter Parker/Spiderman, he looked the part, acted the part and you loved him regardless, but would Andrew Garfield do all that and more?  He looked less geeky, a bit more "Rock n' Roll" and you wouldn't mess with him even without his Spidey suit.  My diagnosis:  Maguire's Peter was consistently liked, he did no more, no less, Garfield's Peter either made you loathe him or instantly respect him, so there is an inpass.

Now the film itself.  Of course, there were some similar plot points, Peter's spider bite, Uncle Ben's murder and Oscorp playing a big part, however what I really liked, which I didn't expect to like, was Peter and Gwen's relationship, none of the will-they-won't-they crap, they got to the point, they did what old Peter and Mary-Jane did in 3 films all in one film and that begs the question of a sequel, what will happen next for the couple?  The baddie in this film, The Lizard, played brilliantly by Rhys Ifans, had a whiff of Doctor Octopus about him.  A doctor wanting to improve his physical form, things go wrong and Spidey has to stop him, but while Doc Ock dies in Spiderman 2, The Lizard gets arrested, maybe a return for the one-armed bandit/lizard, but we shall see.  There was some heart-tugging moments in this film, Uncle Ben's death is always a tear-jerker, especially as it's Martin Sheen in this case, but I was shocked when Gwen's father died at the hands, or claws, of The Lizard, I wanted him to live to see his daughter, but sadly this wasn't to be and Peter had to break-up with Gwen to stop her suffering the same fate, poetic in a way.

So in conclusion, this film was neither better or worse than it's predecessors, but I bet they'll be a couple more adventures for Spiderman to come and I'm excited.  One thing I do miss are 3 words, or two words and a letter, J Jonah Jameson!

Now for The Dark Knight Rises, this wasn't a reboot, this was a sequel and one hell of an epic one at that!  New characters, new baddies and Gotham in even more danger than usual, who ya gonna call?  Batman!

First of all, everyone crows on about how brilliant The Dark Knight was, Heath Ledger was the best part and everything else was alright, if anything, The Dark Knight wasn't a superhero film, it was a gangster film, The Dark Knight Rises was actually a superhero film!  The first thing that I realised about this film had the whole cast from Inception in it, apart from it's star bookings Dicaprio and Page, so myself and my friends said this film was the cast of Inception playing Batman.

When I heard the film's baddie was Bane, I, like many people said "Who?  Why not The Riddler or The Penguin or someone we all know?"  But seeing this film made me realise how bad-ass Bane really is, while The Joker is the thinking man's baddie, Bane is more the violent type, but there is an air of intelligence about him, though it could've been the British accent!  We were also treated to Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, who we all knew was Catwoman, but was never actually said, maybe an attempt to move away from Halle Berry's failed protrayal of her was mentioned in the "How do we get people to watch this film without mentioning Halle Berry as Catwoman" meeting, or it may have been a bit too cheesy in an all-round serious film.  However Hathaway did play her very well.  Something I did notice was there was very little of Batman in this film, you'd think in a Batman film, you'd get the caped crusader in almost all of the scenes, but this wasn't the case, Bruce Wayne wasn't in it much either, or Alfred, or Gordon or Lucius, pretty much anyone who has starred in both the previous films had very little screen time in the third one.  This was a a shame, as Michael Caine was excellent in this film, Alfred became more three-dimensional and Caine really rose to the challenge.  Also Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard were brilliant too and Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman goes without saying.

The film's story was a much simpler one, but I felt it was a more effective one, instead of constant twists and turns that The Dark Knight gave us, TDKR focused on the reprecussions of the previous film and used them to fuel this film in a simpler fashion, though I was confused as to how Bane knew so much about Harvey Dent from one written speech by Commissioner Gordon, or why he was actually called Bane in the first place!  One twist I liked was Miranda Tate being the child who escaped from the prison pit and Bane was the one who helped her and got his face mangled in the process, yet another character Cotillard has played who turned out to be evil (Inception reference.)  This film is pure Christopher Nolan and he has done wonders with the Batman franchise, giving it a new look and format, as well as a couple of cheeky hints of the past (Gordon-Levitt's character is Robin!)  It was pure blockbuster fun, with a great cast and smart script.

Now, who wins this battle of superhero movies?  While both had their merits, I'd say The Dark Knight Rises just wins, simply for epicness!  Do you agree or disagree?

News: Emmys Nominations (Comedy)

The Emmy nominations were announced on Thursday, honestly I don't really care about the Drama category, it's the Comedy I care about!

Best Comedy Series:
30 Rock
The Big Bang Theory
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Girls
Modern Family
Veep

Although Modern Family is the favourite, it wasn't their best season, Big Bang Theory should win!!

Best Lead Actor:
Alec Baldwin - 30 Rock
Louis C.K. - Louie
Don Cheadle - House of Lies
Jon Cryer - Two and a Half Men
Larry David - Curb Your Enthusiasm
Jim Parsons - The Big Bang Theory

In my opinion, only one winner and that is Jim Parsons!!

Best Lead Actress:
Zooey Deschanel - New Girl
Lena Dunham - Girls
Edie Falco - Nurse Jackie
Tina Fey - 30 Rock
Julia Louis-Dreyfus - Veep
Melissa McCarthy - Mike & Molly
Amy Poehler - Parks & Recreation

Anyone could win it, but Zooey Deschanel should win it!

Best Supporting Actor:
Ty Burrell - Modern Family
Jesse Tyler Ferguson - Modern Family
Max Greenfield - New Girl
Bill Hader - Saturday Night Live
Ed O'Neill - Modern Family
Eric Stonestreet - Modern Family

Lots of Modern Family actors in this list and Stonestreet and Burrell have won it before, I think Ed O'Neill should win it, but if anyone from Modern Family wins, I'll be happy!

Best Supporting Actress:
Mayim Bialik - The Big Bang Theory
Julie Bowen - Modern Family
Kathyrn Joosten - Desperate Housewives
Sofia Vergara - Modern Family
Merritt Wever - Nurse Jackie
Kristen Wiig - Saturday Night Live

I would like Mayim Bialik to win, but it's a battle between Bowen and Vergara!

Best Guest Actor:
Will Arnett - 30 Rock
Bobby Cannavale - Nurse Jackie
Jimmy Fallon - Saturday Night Live
Michael J. Fox - Curb Your Enthusiasm
Jon Hamm - 30 Rock
Greg Kinnear - Modern Family

Kinnear for Modern Family, end of!

Best Guest Actress:
Elizabeth Banks - 30 Rock
Kathy Bates - Two & A Half Men
Margaret Cho - 30 Rock
Dot-Marie Jones - Glee
Melissa McCarthy - Saturday Night Live
Maya Rudolph - Saturday Night Live

For sheer comedy, Kathy Bates should win, but I wouldn't mind Dot-Marie Jones winning it!

Very doubtful of getting all of these right, but I hope I do.

TV: New Girl

Time for some telly and this is about one my favourite new shows, aptly named New Girl.  It stars Zooey Deschanel as the quirky yet loveable teacher Jess Day who lives with 3 guys.

What I like about this show is simply the main character.  Jess is a naive but sweet-hearted girl living with 3 guys who are completely the opposite, Nick is a constant pessimist, Schmidt is a douche and Winston is big-headed, yet you can relate which at least one of them and they all look out for one another.

The show's comedy is simply from Jess, being the quirky a-dork-able girl which makes this show great and why Deschanel should win the Emmy for Lead Actress, but I will talk about Comedy Emmys later.  Jess lives in a world where everyone has a nice person deep down inside, yet she keeps meeting people opposite to her.

Nick is probably my favourite male character, his constant negativity in everything is fun to watch, he also finds flaws in things that mean nothing and that's fun too.  Schmidt is like Charlie Harper from Two & A Half Men, a womaniser and now with Charlie gone from our screens, Schmidt can gladly take the crown from him, I also like Schmidt slight OCD tendancies, there was an episode which looks into that and it's one of the best.  Winston is quite likeable, he's trying to move on after being a Latvian basketball star, as we've all tried to do, and fails, but he's the least focused on character.

Overall, this show is one to watch, if you get the chance!

Film: Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World

First, I can offically announce that the long awaited Spiderman Vs. Batman post will be posted next Friday, so look forward to that, but first, here's a review of a film I've just seen.

It stars Steve Carrell and Kiera Knightley in a world about to end as a meteor makes it's way to Earth.  Dodge (Carrell) and Penny (Knightley) who live in the same building join forces to travel across the country so they can be in the right place so they can enjoy their final moments.

The first thing that attracted me to this film is the very odd pairing of Carrell and Knightley, a middle-aged American comic actor and a young British actress isn't something you see everyday and you think the two won't click, but the fact that you see the two very different actors together on the same screen works because you don't expect it and they do work well together.

The story is an interesting one, apocalypse stories in films are usually big budget blockbusters, but this is an independent film with the lead actors being the only draw for audiences.  It also questions the audience as well, what would you do if you knew the end of the world was coming?  You do see varying responses, kids drinking alcohol, assassinations and orgies!  What more do you want in a film?

Another thing I like about this film is the ending, stop reading now if you don't want to know!

A film like this could only end two ways, either the world ends and you're sad or the world doesn't end and you feel cheated.  The film ends with Dodge and Penny, realising they are meant for each other lying on the bed learning about one another as the world slowly crumbles, it's a sad yet beautiful ending, I couldn't think of a better way to end a film like this.

In a time when superheroes are dominating the box office, give this film a chance, it's a feel-good film with great actors and a captivating storyline.  But be prepared for the ultimate battle of Marvel Vs. DC, Spiders Vs. Bats, Garfield Vs. Bale, I can go on.  Amazing Spiderman Vs. The Dark Knight Rises, next Friday!!

TV: Pointless

Time to talk about one of my geeky pleasure shows now, it's Pointless (not the blog) the show!

Basically, 4 pairs of contestants have to find the most obscure answers in a category, like US State Capitals or Tom Hanks Movies, and score as low as possible.  Whoever gets the lowest score will get the chance to play for the jackpot, simple as that!

This show can be very addictive as everyone is bound to have at least one answer for each category and they want to see how obscure it is.  One thing I love about it is the hosts Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman, the two are a great double act and work off one another jokes.  The show is enjoyable as anyone can play along, seeing who has the best answer and who can get the pointless answers too.

All is all, this is one of the best game shows on TV at the moment and the beauty of it is that it's on 5 times a week.  It's on BBC One at 5.15 Mon-Fri, give it a watch and say what you think!!

Film: Men in Black 3

Not much blogging has happen this week, but hopefully I can get back on track, starting with Men in Black 3.  I saw this film today, after it being released over a month ago, but it doesn't matter!

It continues the main story of Agents J and K battling aliens on a daily basis, but the story of this film is about Boris the Animal escaping from a moon prison and travelling back in time to kill Agent K, who put him there in the first place, it's up to J and young K (played brilliantly by Josh Brolin) to stop Boris from destroying present-day Earth.

I really like the Men in Black films, both of them, but when I heard there was time travel involved in this, I was sceptical, it felt a bit cheap and pointless, but watching the film today changed my opinion, it was handled well and was thought out, you ocassionally get loopholes in any time-travel related film/TV show.  I personally wanted to see this film for Will Smith, he's one of my favourite actors and he hasn't been in a film for 4 years, so I was excited to hear he was returning to the big screen to play Agent J, arguably his most iconic film role.  Smith didn't fail to disappoint, it was simply his film as we didn't see much of Tommy Lee Jones, who is also great, and most characters only appeared for at least 45 minutes of the film.

There were a few big names in the film, Jermaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords) played Boris, Emma Thompson played Agent O, the new head of Men In Black, Alice Eve played young Agent O and Nicole Scherzinger played Boris's lover, only for 5 minutes, won't tell you why if you want to see the film.

Something that I noticed in the film was Agent J talking about his father, when I hear a character Will Smith is playing talking about his father, I instantly get a Fresh Prince flashback to that emotional ending when Will's "Dad" leaves him again, I was expecting this again, but I will also withhold this information in case you want to watch the film.

Overall, this film is surprisingly enjoyable, much better than MIB2 and a lot more fun.  Expect a lot of 60's stereotyping, freaky looking aliens and a secret Andy Warhol didn't want you to know.  If you don't like this film, prepare for the neuralizer!

Opinion: Books Vs. Films

Like Religion Vs. Science, Man Vs. Woman and Xbox360 Vs. PS3, there is a debate which starting to wage war against paper and cameras and that is whether the book or the film of a certain story is better.

I know so many people who would say books are better, but there are a few points I'd like to give.  Firstly, in most cases the book came first, we as humans always like the original and hate change, I bet if were the other way round, people would say the film is better.  Secondly, a book doesn't become popular until the film comes out.  Only a few die-hards would've known Twilight and The Hunger Games were books before they became multi-million dollar franchises.  Now Harry Potter is the exception, but the popularity exploded when the first film came out, thus the books became incredibly popular.  That wouldn't happen if the book was better than the film.  Thirdly, the films make so much more money than the books, people generally love films, they use both the eyes and ears, you can see people and relate to them easily.

Now, book lovers will say the book goes into detail and you can imagine it, however, a book takes too much commitment, it could take days or weeks to finish a book, you have to remember what happened previously and if you don't, you don't know what's going on.  A film takes two hours, you can sit down and enjoy for a short period of time and you don't have to keep coming back to it.  I find it much easier to commit and relate to a story if I watch it in one go, I don't like watching TV shows week-by-week, I love watching it all in one sitting.

I know people are going to disagree with everything I just wrote, but that's just me!

Opinion: Making The Bus Monitor Cry

From one opinion to another.  This has been making news all week and I actually watched it and boy was I sick.  I defend teenagers to the end, but even this made me shamed to be a teenager.

Basically, this video is ten minutes of kids verbally abusing an innocent woman for no reason.  I watched parts of it, no way could anyone watch the whole thing from start to finish without screaming with rage or crying with disgust.

The one thing which really upsets me is the fact that these kids are around my age, perhaps younger and there is no way that I, or anyone I know who's my age, would ever do that, let alone film it, the only logical reason for this being online is because the kids doing it wanted to seem tough and cool, whereas it comes across as just plain sad.

To anyone who watches this and hates all teenagers now, I must say, we aren't all like that, it's just a minority ruining our generation and these kids and the rioters from last year aren't doing us any favours, so hate the "excuses for humans" we call children, don't hate the rest of us.

If you are brave enough to watch it, the link's below.

Opinion: Cheryl Cole

My first ever opinion review on one particular person and I thought we could start with a national treasure.  Singer Cheryl Cole is one of the nation's most loved people, she's gorgeous, she's nice and she makes music people enjoy, but there are a couple of down points.

One of the main problems is the singing, she can't sing very well, no matter what it is she attempt to sing.  This does confuse me, as she won a talent show pre-X Factor, so she won on the basis of actual singing ability, so what happened ten years ago?  Well, Cheryl won as part of a group, so she's always had four other voices backing her up, a solo career means singing alone, no other voices to back her up.  She must've had talent, maybe the publicity got her away from the vocal coach.

There's no denying Cheryl is attractive, she's a male fantasy, constant winner of Sexiest Woman in the World and envy of women across the country, my personal opinion,  I don't see it.  She's too skinny, to me skinny isn't attractive, she's pretty in the face and that's it, men might think I'm mad, but that's my opinion.

What Cheryl needs to do is to find a new job, singing has given her a platform but there are probably things she can do better, modelling is a possibility, dancing too, but there aren't any megastar dancers.  She needs a man too, one that won't mess her around, she said that she has a thing for Prince Harry, I say Harry should go for it, they'd make a great couple, and it'd be good for gingers too!

TV: Man Vs. Food

The show that makes McDonalds looks like a gym is of course Man Vs. Food.  It's presented by Adam Richman, a food fanatic who travels around America to find restaurants which have odd meals and tough challenges.

There's something very addictive about this show, you can sit back, relax and watch a guy talk about food for 30 minutes, what's not to love?  As a self-confessed foodie myself, I love the fact that the show is more than just people scoffing mammoth amounts of food, if anything it praises good food made by independent restaurants and gives them much needed publicity.

Now, you do get people saying shows like this are disgusting as eating contests are a bit gross and food should be enjoyed, not force fed for glory, these people have never watched this show.  It's so much more than an eating contest for half a hour, the contest is the last five minutes, it looks at incredible food and praises not only the quantity, but the quality too, most of the big foods have either won awards or are locally famous, Richman also meets people who travel miles just for the food, that's commitment!

Sadly, the show has finished, but it still gets played on TV and is developing a loyal fanbase both in the US and UK and has made a star of Adam Richman, who is perfect for the job, he knows how to talk to people and can get people laughing, even if his mouth's on fire or his stomach is close to bursting.  So, tasty food and a loveable host makes this show almost perfect and I recommend it to food fans across the globe!

News: GCSEs scrapped for O-Levels

The big news story of the day is the scrapping of GCSEs for the much tougher O-Levels.  Michael Gove has announced today that by 2014, GCSEs are history and O-Levels will be re-introduced into the curriculum.

Now, I've already done GSCEs, so I feel obliged to give my opinions about this story.  I personally don't mind if the GCSE is removed, I disagree with the fact that they are removed for being too easy.  I did GCSEs for two years and I can tell you, it's no picnic, they are difficult, not as difficult as A-Levels, but they are suppose to be harder.

Of course the middle-aged politicians are going to say they are easy, most of them have had a good education and they did O-Levels many moons ago.  Also, has anyone considered that most kids are quite smart?  The negative stereotyping of a few teenagers (last year's riots come to mind) has given adults the impression that all of them are stupid, anti-social 'chavs'.  I'm not saying there aren't any of these, but not all of them are.  I know that there are kids out there that care about their future, revise for exams and take it seriously, I'm one of them and I know even more of them.

So, the notion of GCSEs being easy is ridiculous, I've been through it and so many thousands of others.  I just hope that the new O-Levels won't affect people's futures too much, I can say that an exam doesn't measure a person's intelligence, there are many ways to determine how clever people are but if exams are the way to go, don't make them too hard, the future of the nation does depend of it.

Film: Monsters University Trailer

Any Pixar die-hard will know that yesterday saw the trailer for the long-awaited sequel to Monsters Inc.  And I must say, it looks incredible!

We all know it's going to be about how the dynamic duo Mike and Sulley met, but I've got a feeling there maybe more to it.  The trailer promises college escapades, such as turning the ball shaped Mike into a disco ball, which is the best thing ever, but there has to be more.  The beauty of a film is presenting a dilemma and seeing how the characters solve it, it doesn't really work if the whole film is seeing whatever college monster students do.  Knowing Pixar, they'll have something up their sleeves, plus their teaser trailers never give the plot away, so I am very excited to see what happens and I rate this as the first must-see film of 2013!

Film: In Time

In Time is a 2011 film starring Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, Olivia Wilde, Cillian Murphy and Alex Pettyfer.  It's about Will Salas (Timberlake) trying to change a world where time is currency and the rich live forever.

First of all, as soon as I heard about this film, I was instantly interested, a world where time is literally money brings up a lot of ethical and social issues and I wanted to see how they were handled.  I must say they were handled very well, you can tell a lot of preparation and thought went into conceiving a world like this.

Two things I particually enjoy about this world is the casual use of time as currency, there were constant references to the price of things, from coffee to bus fare to hotels to casinos.  Second was the fact that everyone in this world looks 25 or under, you can't tell who's young or old, it took me by surprise when Timberlake's character called Olivia Wilde mother, they around the same age in real life.  Another thing about this is we see Philippe Weis's (film's baddie) mother-in-law, wife and daughter (played by Seyfried) together, they all look the same age, it's very freaky!

The film's plotline was simple enough to understand, but it did leave very little to be resolved, a world where currency is time which equals life leaves little to change, the green numbers on their wrist were actually genetic, not technology grafted onto them, so you couldn't deactivate them.  Another thing that concerned me was the main plotline itself wasn't focused on a lot, most of the film was Timberlake and Seyfried's characters getting to scraps and trying to get time to keep them going, but the film itself is over 100 minutes, that's a lot of currency for them!  There was also an unanswered question; What happens when they sleep?  Does the timer keep going or stop?  If you sleep for around 8 hours and the poor can't afford 8 hours, how do they live?  Maybe I'm reading too much into it.

The acting was surprisingly good, I expected Justin Timberlake, a boyband member, to be a terrible actor and was brought in for a pretty face, but he surprised me, Amanda Seyfried was decent and Cillian Murphy was very good.  It was a shame Olivia Wilde wasn't in the film too much and Johnny Galecki (Leonard from TBBT) wasn't in it nearly enough, same with Matthew Bomer (Bryce Larkin in Chuck.)

Sci-fi fans may not think too highly about this film, but it's definitely one to watch.  I recommend this film to pretty much anyone, it will make you think about the social class system, but there's enough action to wet your appetite.

Film: Avengers Assemble

A couple of months ago, I reviewed the Avengers film series in preparation for the film, now the film's been out for a couple of months and it's the 3rd highest grossing film of all time, so I feel the time is right to review it.

We all know the score, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye join forces to defeat Loki, Thor's adopted brother who brings alien baddies to Earth and soon the world's in trouble and it needs protecting.  Cue the Avengers!!

This film is basically a comic book fan's wet dream, loads of superheroes fighting together.  What I love is the crossovers, you get Iron Man and Captain America working together and Thor and Hulk do a little teamwork too.  You've got Iron Man's intelligent put-downs, Captain America's leadership, Thor's general awesomeness, Hawkeye's accuracy, Black Widow's skills in combat and Hulk's SMASH!!  Plus Nick Fury watching over them, I was expecting him at one point to say "I've had it with this motherf***in' aliens on this motherf***in' Earth!" or "Say what again, I dare you!"  Sadly not, though there was a stupid ass idea involved.

Something else that I loved was the comedy.  There were a lot of jokes and visual gags, we all know which ones we loved, something involving a big green man beating up two gods, on separate occasions.  Iron Man was on perfect sarcastic form and Hulk even got a couple of jokes too!

So, this is the perfect blockbuster; comedy, action, explosions, an easy-to-follow story and heroes uniting to kick some butt!

News: Blatter Wants Goal Line Technology

So, England are in the quarter finals, good news!  However after the Ukraine goal that wasn't allowed, FIFA boss and general anti-Brit Sepp Blatter wants to introduce Goal Line Technology.

Now this has really annoyed me and the rest of Britain, not because he wants to introduce GLT, that's a good thing, makes the competition fairer, it's annoyed us because of the timing.  Any hardcore England fan will know that Frank Lampard scored a goal in the England/Germany game in the World Cup two years ago.  We moaned and groaned to introduce GLT to major tournaments, but FIFA had none of it, we moved on.

Now as soon as it matters to England's success, Blatter wants GLT and says "it's a necessity", if it is so important, why now?  Why not two years ago?  Why not ten years ago?  If that goal was allowed, then England would still be in the quarters, but we would play Spain and we'd be screwed!

Maybe I and the rest of England are reading too much into this, maybe the amount of disallowed goals has gotten to a point where GLT is needed, though it's very coincidental it should happen as soon as England win and we play Italy, a good team, but much easier to beat than Spain.

TV: Married... With Children

This show is a cultural milestone for comedy.  It broke the mould of family based comedy and made it funny to point out people's weaknesses.

The story follows Al Bundy, a former football star who ended up as a shoe salesman and general failure.  He's unhappily married to Peggy, the red-headed, money-grabbing wife who makes it her goal in life to ruin Al's.  Their kids are Kelly, a blonde bimbo with no intelligence and Bud, a socially awkward genius.  Their neighbours are Marcy, a feminist who hates Al.  She was married to Steve Rhoades until he left and she married to Jefferson D'Arcy.

This show really interests me as it's a kind of show I don't usually like or watch, yet for some reason, I can't get enough.  I think it's because you feel sorry for Al, well I do, you want him to succeed just once and it never happens, mainly due to Peggy, who I've deducted to be the baddie in this show due to her constant spending and her hatred of Al.  Al has a reason to hate Peggy, Peggy hates Al cos he hates her!

The main source for comedy is of course, the put-downs.  They are mainly from Al to Peggy or Marcy, but Peggy and Marcy do bite back, plus Bud and Kelly have a good sibling rivalry, any brother and sister know what it's like to have someone who just knows how to push your buttons.

Something else I've noticed is the lack of resolution or moral, it's not a show which teaches you life lessons, it's to laugh at idiots who don't know better and make your life seem less pathetic, which does feel good!

In a weird way, I think Al does get what he wants in the end.  Any Modern Family fans know Al Bundy is played by Ed O'Neill aka Jay Pritchett, so in some kind of strange TV realm, Al is divorced from Peg and married to a young, beautiful Columbian and has two successful adult kids.  So in a way, Al Bundy comes out on top!

News: It's Euro Time!!

Well the group stages are over, England are through and they have a fighting chance, can anything be better?  Well...

First of all, the pre-match and post-match analysis on both channels is incredibly dull, I personally don't want to re-watch all the good parts and determine what they should've done, it's in the past, move on!!  The commentary is also dull, I know no more than what I knew before they spoke.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the competition, it's one of the few times that the nation gets together and supports the same team, though you get the haters who think the England team are a bunch of over-paid man-children (which they are,) but that should be left aside.  I like the players who play for the love of the game, not the size of the cheque.  It strikes me that Ronaldo, Rooney and Balotelli are in it for the money, they enjoy the lifestyle more than the game, nothing wrong with loving the lifestyle, just don't be idiots about it!

At this time, you also get the "experts"  who shout at the screen and say how it should be done.  There is no point, 1: They can't hear you 2: What's done is done, move on!  Roy Hodgson seems to be doing just fine and we're winning, don't complain about one missed free kick, focus on the on-target goals!

So, the knock-out stages begin on Thursday and as usual, England are last to play.  Everyone will predict Spain, Germany, Portugal and England for the semi-finals, it would mean we would face Germany in the semis, but a semi final knock-out will be just fine, we knew from day one we wouldn't win, but at least if we lose with some dignity, we'll move on and wait for 2014.

TV: How I Met Your Mother

This show is the most popular 'clever' sitcom on TV.  It follows Ted Mosby, an architect who lives in New York with his friends Marshall and Lily, who are married, Robin, his on-off friend/girlfriend and Barney, a suit wearing womanizer who has various social rules.

I'd heard of this show and seen a couple of episodes when they were on TV, but didn't think too much of it.  Then I decided to watch the first 3 episodes back-to-back online and I was instantly hooked.  I then got the first 2 seasons on DVD.  What I like about it is that it's a new take on a familar format, group of friends in New York does sound familar (Seinfeld, Friends, etc) but the fact it's being told as a story to Future Ted's kids and facts are misconstrued by constant re-telling or lies makes it more believeable (ironically.)  Another thing I like is the middle ground with the format in terms of audience.  Due to the complicated story lines, in terms of filming, the show can't be filmed in front of a live audience, so they add a laugh track, but it's very subtle and not over the top, the right amount for a show like it.

Another great thing is the characters.  Each one has their own identity and can relate with at least one character.  My favourite (and everyone's favourite) character is Barney.  Neil Patrick Harris is perfect for the part and is a brilliant comic actor.  I don't relate to Barney, but he's a very funny character and is the breakout star of the show, and most importantly, he is legen-wait for it-dary!  When the show finishes, he needs a spin-off!  I personally relate to Ted, I act older than my age, I'm not a fan of nightclubs and I'm looking for 'The One'.

And one more thing I like is the bold risks the show take, in format and in narrative.  There have been some tear-jerking scenes in the show's seven year history, as well as some iconic scenes (Slap Bet comes to mind!)

So all in all, this show is brilliant and I recommend it. True Story!

News: It's Easter!!

Well, that time of the year where eating chocolate is necessary is here again!  I like Easter, it's like Christmas: Light Edition, less presents, less good stuff on TV and less focus on big meals.  The only similarity is masses of chocolate.

Although the chocolate companies wouldn't say this, I do think Easter is a little bit pointless, Good Friday is the day where we shouldn't eat meat and eat fruit buns with a cross instead and Jesus died on that day, what's "good" about that?  Easter Monday is just as pointless, even more so, as it has no meaning, it's just another bank holiday so people don't go to work.

Also, if Easter is the celebration of Christ coming back from the dead, why does the day keep changing?  Have it on one day in April and leave it at that.  I know it's something to do the Summer Solstice, but why does it matter?  Maybe, no one can remember the actual day, or maybe it didn't happen, but that's another story.

Easter Sunday should be renamed International Chocolate Day, it wouldn't be any different!!

That's my opinion, what do you think?

Film: The Avengers Series

I have seen all the Avenger related films, apart from Incredible Hulk, but who has?  Iron Man is a very different film, as 30 minutes of it is Tony Stark in a cave making the prototype suit in which he escapes, it's still a great film though.  Iron Man 2 is just as good, bigger budget, bigger plot and Scarlett Johansson as a bad-ass ninja agent, what more do you want?  Thor is my personal favourite, not only is it a clever and simple concept, it has fun with it, making Thor weaker is an interesting way of showing a hero, it may have been done before, but Chris Hemsworth makes a suitable and funny hero and Loki is one evil god, he's the baddie in the Avengers.  Thor also has the most unanswered questions.  One, how did Loki survive?  Two, how does Thor get back to Earth?  The Avengers film will hopefully answer these questions.  Captain America: The First Avenger is the last film before The Avengers, the majority of it is set in World War II and the rest of it is set in the present day.  You do feel sorry for Steve Rogers as he's been frozen for 70 years and never gets to see Peggy again, but it could well be something they'll look into in The Avengers or even in the sequel as all the heroes will get another film after The Avengers this year.

All the trailers look amazing for this film and it most definitely won't disappoint any fans and will be a film to remember, forget The Hobbit, this is far more cooler and awesome!!

But it's my opinion, What do you think?

News: Sandler Sweeps The Razzies

So the Razzies (or Anti-Oscars) were last night and history was made as Adam Sandler and his film Jack and Jill won every single award in the ceremony.  Just Go With It won two awards, but only because it was packaged with Jack and Jill as Adam Sandler won Worst Actor and Dennis Dugan won Worst Director.

I like the Razzies, as it points out the flaws in a very diverse area, not everyone can get a film right and it shows as Adam Sandler can't do anything right, has he ever made a successful film?  At least Nicolas Cage has starred in a couple of good movies, KickAss being my personal favourite.  Sandler has done nothing for the good of humanity and he still goes on making films.  If a film is that bad, why make it?

Anyway, my opinion, I welcome all views, just don't insult other peoples!

What's It All About?

I am James Booth.  I'm 19, a student and watch a lot of films and TV shows.  But this blog isn't just about that, it's about what I think about things in the world, whether it's a news story, something I've noticed, sports, people or even something I hate.  Of course, I don't expect you all to agree with me, but it's what I think, we have different opinions and I welcome them all.  So I'll post some stuff and I expect some feedback!!
